Future Perspectives in Short Bowel Syndrome: Organoid-Based Tissue-Engineered Small Intestine, SIC, and Xenotransplantation

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) remains a major cause of irreversible intestinal failure, often necessitating long-term parenteral nutrition and presenting limited curative options. Emerging technologies, such as organoid-based tissue engineering and xenotransplantation, offer promising future therapeutic strategies. This chapter explores the development and application of patient-derived intestinal organoids, scaffold preparation, and co-culture techniques essential for creating functional grafts. It also highlights the laboratory requirements for organoid culture, specimen handling, and innovative scaffolding approaches, including decellularized human and animal tissues. The chapter emphasizes the potential of these technologies to advance personalized regenerative medicine, overcome current transplantation limitations, and provide sustainable solutions for patients with SBS.
