Ground Zero: Learning to Live with Opioids in Our Homes and Communities
摘要
In this chapter, I outline a family-focused, child-centered framework for living safely with opioids in our homes and communities, the primary settings where opioid exposures and fatalities occur. Drawing upon foundational principles of child safety, this comprehensive approach reduces the risk for everyone in the household—children and adults alike. The framework I propose offers concrete guidance across three critical domains: family education, provider support, and pragmatic safety measures. Families need specific knowledge about identifying opioids, recognizing drug toxicity, implementing commonsense safety measures, and responding to emergencies. Healthcare providers need practical strategies for communicating vital safety information during key clinical encounters. Most importantly, this chapter provides details on accessible safety measures—secure storage through lockboxes, systematic disposal via community programs, and comprehensive emergency preparedness with naloxone—that substantially mitigate risks. While these immediate interventions empower families to protect themselves today, broader systemic reforms remain essential to address the root causes of this devastating crisis.
