Introduction
摘要
This introductory chapter outlines the aims, scope and motivation of this book. Using a comics page as a framing example, it identifies four aspects of narrative drawing that have been of interest to visual metaphor scholarship. These are pictorial similes and hybrids, which either juxtapose or fuse depicted subjects in order to invite viewers to draw analogies between them; pictorial runes, which are graphic devices that represent non-visible phenomena such as olfactory, tactile, auditory or affective sensations; the distortions and exaggerations of caricature, which have often been likened to metaphor due to their departure from standard representational practice; and the broader category of features of graphic style, which are taken to be metaphorical to the extent that they imbue depicted subjects with personality and expressive properties. These four aspects of narrative drawing are contextualised in terms of the theoretical and methodological frameworks with which they have historically been associated, and these intersections of analytical positions and objects of study are then used to introduce the structure of the book.
