Health Benefits of β –Glucans
摘要
This chapter presents in detail about various health benefits offered by beta-glucan (BG) from bacteria, fungi, yeast, mushrooms, cereals-oat, barley, and sorghum. In vitro and in vivo studies on BG discovered its anti-obesity effect, improved glucose tolerance, and hypocholesterolemic effect, and therefore gained significant attention in the field of nutraceutical research. BG was also found to possess prebiotic activity that efficiently influences the gut microbiota composition. Additionally, it maintains lipid profile, promotes cardiovascular health, boosts immunity, and cancer prevention. These effects of BG make it a prominent source for preventing and managing metabolic syndrome. BGs can also be utilised in food industries as a superfood component to deliver nutraceutical benefits for maintaining health through novel food formulation.
