Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a frequent clinical presentation of atherosclerosis. The first manifestation is typically pain, discomfort, or fatigue of the calf, forcing the patient to stop exertion, referred to as intermittend claudication (IC). Guidelines on the management of PAD underscore the importance of exercise therapy for the management of patients with IC, preferably in a structured and supervised programme. This includes a thorough clinical assessment, risk factor management, functional testing and a supervised exercise training with the aim to improve walking capacity, reduce symptoms and slow disease progression. Treadmill and overground walking are the most common and recommended training modalities.
