Peace theory and politics is in crisis. While the claim is not new, with several authors pointing to a crisis in peacebuilding for more than a decade, this chapter argues that today’s global conditions of serial crisis make the crisis explicit in new ways. In particular, if the dialectic of peace and violence is such that the latter always provides an opening towards the former, then this historical dialectic appears to have come to have become stuck. Rather than signalling the end of peace, I argue that we should locate the crisis of peace today not only in the social conditions of serial crisis but rather to effectively address the crisis of peace we must, in a sense, begin again and rethink peace thinking.
