It is bizarre that, after over 40 years of failed bi-communal and bi-zonal federalism negotiations because of the Hellenism passion of Greek Cypriots and their refusal to accept Turkish Cypriots as an equal party, key international actors are still pushing for a federal settlement. It is clear that a so called bi-communal and bi-zonal federal settlement has no chance of success under the shadow of the dominant and unchanging Hellenism and superiority passion prevalent in Greek Cypriot society. Such a settlement would, in effect, result in the perpetuation of the conflict with the Turkish Cypriot people being tolerated for so long as it behaves itself: Apartheid by any other name. It is my hope that the so far covered up side of the Cyprus case, as narrated, informs and sheds new light on possible ways forward to bring the long-standing Cyprus issue to closure in a fair and sustainable way. I believe that what is proposed by the Turkish Cypriot side, a structured cooperative relationship between the two existing sovereign States with equal rights and status, afforded international recognition with both members of the EU, would bring security, stability and socio-economic well-being to both peoples of the island; enhance the crucial relationship between Türkiye, the EU and the Western Alliance; and, act as a model for realistic, multi-cultural and cooperative solutions to similar, longstanding conflicts.
