Following the failed Crans-Montana Summit, Akıncı stated that if GCs continue to refuse power sharing as equals, two States will take root. In February 2018, Anastasiades was elected President for a second term. After congratulating Anastasiades, Akıncı said that GC mentality change was essential to restart talks. In April Akıncı took a step back and stated that meaningful negotiations could start if GCs accepted UNSG Guterres’ framework of 30 June 2017. In response Anastasiades stated that if Akıncı accepted the Guterres framework of 4 July 2017, a framework that he made up, this would be a positive development. There was no such framework. In July, Guterres assigned Jane Holl Lute to help break the impasse and evaluate the parties’ commitment to negotiations. The separate meeting of Guterres with the two leaders in September did not yield results either. In May 2019, the new UBP and HP coalition government’s programme stated that a more realistic and sustainable model for settlement would be the establishment of a cooperative relationship between the two existing States. At Guterres’ invitation Akıncı and Anastasiades met in Berlin in November but nothing came out of this meeting as well. In the TRNC elections of October 2020, Ersin Tatar campaigned for a cooperative relationship between the two States based on their sovereign equality and won against Akıncı.
