New TRNC President Eroğlu was against many of the convergences Talat had agreed on, particularly single sovereignty and cross voting. UNSG Ki-moon insisted that the talks resume from where they were left off. Though he considered this undemocratic Eroğlu bowed and appointed Kudret Özersay as his Special Representative at the talks. In January and July 2011, the two leaders came together with the UNSG in Geneva to discuss negotiation headings EU Matters, Economy, Governance and Power Sharing, Property, Territory, Security and Guarantees. While some progress was made on the EU and Economy headings, differences prevailed on the remaining. On 11 July, an explosion blew up the main GC power station, forcing them to acquire power from TCs. To revert the escalation on hydrocarbon exploration activity, Eroğlu offered Christofias in September to either mutually suspend all hydrocarbon activities or form a joint committee to manage the hydrocarbon resources. GCs refused this offer. In October 2011 and January 2012, the UNSG invited the two leaders to Greentree, New York, and urged them to unblock the obstacles to finalise a settlement. This again failed because of GC irredentism. On 8 June 2012, Special Representative Özersay resigned and was replaced by Osman Ertuğ.
