Given the unpredictability of the time of conception and the understanding that the health of both partners contributes to a successful pregnancy, the importance of preconception care cannot be overstated. A key player in this crucial period is the nutrition of women. Studies have linked poor preconception health to adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, affecting child growth and development. Pre-pregnancy body mass index is associated with the risk of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, and preterm birth. While pre-pregnancy micronutrient deficiencies have been associated with immediate adverse effects, their long-term implications remain unclear. Dietary habits leading up to pregnancy impact gestational outcomes, emphasizing the mother’s role as the primary nutrition provider during the initial 1000 days, influencing foetal development and long-term health. Current evidence on preconception health care emphasises starting pregnancy at an optimal weight, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and addressing mental/physical health conditions.
