Regional Blocs and World Challenges. The Role of the European Union
摘要
The chapter looks into the role and purpose of regional integration. The experience and theory show us how good results stem more from international trade and open economies rather than regional integration as such. The creation of regional blocs can however be an opportunity, or even the sole possibility, for improvements not only within the integrated area, but also for other countries. The European Union is a good example of how fostering internal policies can have a positive impact in the international arena. That may come as the result of strategies followed by the blocs, with an open attitude towards international trade. Articulation of regional blocs with the World Trade Organization is further considered.
