The recognition of the material present on the bottom of the slide, the background, is of great help to the cytologist when he has to interpret the cell type associated with it and, sometimes, is even fundamental for the diagnosis. In this chapter, some keys to understanding the morphology of the backgrounds that can be found in both inflammatory and neoplastic skin diseases of dogs and cats will be given.
