Although the Romanowsky-type staining is capable of visualizing most microorganisms and allows the nuclear and cytoplasmic morphology to be evaluated, the use of some cytochemical stains, referred to as “special stains,” can sometimes be necessary to reach the diagnosis. In this chapter, the most commonly used dye in the daily practice of veterinary clinics and other less commonly used special cytochemical dyes will be discussed.
