Simulation models of crowd dynamics heavily rely on mathematics. An example that has proven especially successful, for research software and commercial software alike, is to let virtual pedestrians navigate space by optimizing a utility function. This ansatz entails a string of mathematical sub-problems, each of them solvable, in principle. We will use two particularly relevant sub-problems to showcase why some solutions are commercially successful, that is, they find their way into products, and others don’t.
