This chapter is dedicated to the development of digital substation (DS) electronic documentation using the System Configuration description Language (SCL), which, according to IEC 61850, is based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML). The chapter provides a brief description of each SCL file, which reflects different parts of the DS, as well as a brief overview of the software tools used to create SCL files. In accordance with the requirements of IEC 61850-4 and IEC 61850-6, information is presented related to the process of designing digital substations, which involves the creation of electronic project documentation files using SCL. These files must contain the data model of the design object, descriptions of all intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) of the power facility, and the information exchange between them, including communication parameters of these data links.
