This chapter examines the motivating factors behind the radical transformation of traditional electric power systems into “intelligent” ones through the implementation of the “Smart Grid” concept. It is demonstrated that without such a transformation, it will be impossible to address the challenges faced by humanity in terms of providing electrical energy. The measures applied over more than a century to ensure the proper functioning of the EPE have only managed to slow the pace at which these problems are growing. The concept of “Smart Grid” is decoded, and the technological and personnel actions required for the "digital transition" of the EPE are identified and explained. Additionally, the advantages of intelligent power systems over traditional ones are presented and clarified.

摘要
