This chapter presents a story of Dr. Sonia Geschwindt Conolly who is a Cameroon-born practicing neurosurgeon at the Upper Peninsula Health System Marquette—the Upper Peninsula’s largest hospital. Sonia recounts how her career path was defined not just by her personal drive and perseverance, but also the experiences she had in her childhood community. She also emphasizes the support and guidance she received from family and colleagues. Sonia highlights that Marquette is a perfect place for developing a professional career as well as a perfect town to raise a family. Sonia’s role in the community makes Marquette, MI, her home and the setting for expressing her identity.
