Experience in the Use of Solid Industrial Waste in Geotechnics

The article presents the author’s experience using several solid industrial wastes (blast furnace slag, glass scrap, millings, construction waste, overburden, etc.) in geotechnical engineering. The world experience of utilising construction waste, marble waste, cement production by-products, foundry sand, blast furnace slag, ash, and glass powder for stabilisation of soils of foundations and road embankments is analysed. The article gives examples of the use of blast furnace slag, glass scrap, tinplate, overburden, and organic-free construction waste instead of crushed stone and hard concrete for drilling boreholes and creating rigid extensions of packed piles in drilled boreholes, examples of improving the geotechnical properties of construction waste dumps up to 3 m thick by deep compaction using the drilled wells technology, construction of sand pads 4–6 m thick with a total area of 190 ha by layer-by-layer rolling of overburden of low-cohesive rocks of iron quartzite deposits. At the same time, all sites are characterised by complex engineering and geological conditions, such as loess subsidence and bulk and weak soils. The modifications and modes of known technologies for the disposal of solid industrial waste, as well as some features of the design of geotechnical facilities, are substantiated. The regularities of the influence of the parameters and modes of rollers on the values of physical and mechanical properties of layer-compacted overburden sands and their mixture in the composition of the cushions are established.
