Urban Technologies for Sustainable Aging: Addressing Vision Impairments in Older Populations

According to the WHO, over 1 billion people worldwide experience moderate to severe visual impairment. A significant majority of these people are aged 50 or older. Urban areas often concentrate environmental factors such as pollution, toxic gases and chemicals, which contribute to the development of visual impairments and exacerbate eye health issues. Unfortunately, these conditions are frequently irreversible, subjecting affected individuals to these challenges as they age. In addition, there is a digital divide among people in terms of using mobile Apps and wearables which becomes more evident the older they get. This article analyses the digital divide experienced by individuals aged over 50 with visual impairments, investigating this disparity through the perspective of technology user perception. This chapter specifically aimed to explore individuals’ perceptions on how technology has contributed to enhancing various aspects of their daily lives; alongside evaluating the effectiveness of solutions they have adopted to overcome challenges through technology use. The data was sourced from the questionnaire ‘Encuesta de Discapacidad, Autonomía personal y Situaciones de Dependencia, EDAD (2020)’ carried out in Spain among people with disabilities. Among the 2,405 participants who addressed the question related to visual impairments, 74 individuals reported retinitis pigmentosa, 257 magna myopia, 367 age-related macular degeneration, 150 diabetic retinopathy, 345 glaucoma and 1,207 were affected by cataracts. The results indicate a prevailing negative perception among individuals concerning the use of technology, particularly in relation to aspects of vision, self-care and domestic life. However, a positive trend was evident among people with visual impairments, as they recognize the potential of technology to provide valuable assistance. Consequently, there is a growing emphasis on supportive technologies designed to prevent dangerous situations and enhance safety during urban public transport use. Further improvements in these technologies hold the potential to create safer and more sustainable urban environments. Additionally, exploring quantum computing optimization could enhance the design of these technologies by efficiently correlating user perception data with functional variables.
