Radar remote sensing of the sea surface involves the radiation and propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves in the atmosphere and their backscattering from the sea surface. These processes are governed by Maxwell’s equations in the air together with the associated boundary conditions at the air/water interface. In this chapter we recall the elementary notions of electromagnetism, which are necessary to understand the physical description of the sea echo, starting with the propagation in the air.
