The concept of Sexual Trolling is not a new concept. Its an act which has been continuing since ages where women have been humiliated and abused because of being women. They were subjected to listening indecent words funnily made by the opposite gender irrespective of places like roads, streets, etc. The women are subject to humiliation on the basis of their sexuality like body structure, color, their personal choice etc. Sometimes the cases lead to drastic consequences like inflicting self torture, suicides attempt or even inflicting injuries to others. The most commonly used social media are X (previously Twitter) Instagram, Facebook etc. Going into the details, a troll is “a person who intentionally antagonizes others online by posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content”, and when a social media user posts comments that are meant to be deceptive, demeaning or humiliating to another user, known or unknown. It could be a response to someone’s posts or the user’s post which is intended to hurt someone on the social media platform. Sexual trolling on social media is basically aimed to humiliate sexually by abusing a user on the basis of her gender or a humiliation that is gender based. These are some of the common forms of violence women face in an online platform while using their social media handles most commonly X, Instagram or Meta. Therefore the basic objective of this chapter is to understand the concept of sexual trolling with few instances taken from social media platforms.
