The Danxia Basin, in northern Guangdong Province, is one of continental fault basins in the late Mesozoic Basin-and-Range Tectonic System in Southeast China. The Cretaceous basin filling is characterized by red-colored siliciclastic rocks (red beds) with a thickness of about 4000 m. These red beds are nearly horizontal and vary from pebbles to clay in grain size. The texture, sedimentary structures, lithology, and fossils are collectively indicative of a superaqueous oxidization environment. Among them, the Upper Cretaceous Danxia Formation is subdivided into three members, namely Bazhai, Jinshiyan, and Baizhaiding Member in ascending order. The Bazhai and Baizhaiding members are dominated by alluvial conglomerates, while the Jinshiyan Member is featured by eolian cross-bedded sandstones. They are hard to support the well-developed cliffy slopes in the basin. The cutting by intersecting fractures have controlled the spatial assemblage of mesas, cliffs, and canyons. Cavernous weathering forms are well developed on sandstone and conglomerate walls. The landscape and landforms have had a pivotal and prolonged impact on cultural relics including ancient temples, villages, and cliff inscriptions. The outstanding geodiversity and geoheritage serve to make Danxiashan an ideal site for geotourism and geoscience education.
