Background

Located in the northeast of Shaoguan City in Guangdong Province, Danxiashan UNESCO Global Geopark, also known as the Redstone Park of China, spans a total area of 290 km2. About half of this area is densely covered by the iconic ‘Danxia landform’. The highest peak in the park is Bazhai, reaching an elevation of 619 m. Mount Danxiashan had been designated as a national scenic area in 1988 and a national Geological and Geomorphological Nature Reserve in 1995 (State Council 1988, 1995). It became a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2004 and a World Heritage Site in 2010 (UNESCO 2024, 2025).
