This chapter I interpret the main hierarchies at play and examine how New York State negotiated legal reforms with rabbinic authorities. A set of legal reforms was developed in consultation with rabbinic authorities and subsequently integrated into the State’s family law, marking a quiet but significant transformation in the civil regulation of private religious life.
