This chapter examines the legal claims advanced by Uwe Romeike, the father of the family, each of which was denied by the courts. The judicial reasoning behind these denials was clear and, in most instances, robust. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has consistently affirmed the idea that schools are not merely sites of instruction, but also spaces of civic formation: places where children are exposed to diversity, pluralism, and the normative practices of democratic life. German law mandates compulsory schooling for all children, without exception. This obligation reflects the State’s refusal to endorse or tolerate the development of “parallel societies” that reject these civic commitments.
