Effective operationalization of the Good Lives Model (GLM) requires not only skilled clinicians but environments that afford clients opportunities to implement a good life plan. This chapter focuses on the broad policy implications of the GLM, starting with a brief review of the GLM practice framework and highlighting some key considerations in relation to correctional policy. Next is an examination of policy implications for rehabilitation in institutional settings, including descriptions of the development and some key characteristics of a recent alternative to traditional prisons (i.e., detention houses) and their alignment with the GLM, with the situation in Belgium used as a case example. We then discuss community-based policy implications, analyzing contemporary policy for its alignment with the GLM, with a focus on sex crime policies given their widespread implementation and implications. We conclude with some reflections on broader justice system-level implications of the GLM.
