Interconnectedness of Plastisphere, Marine Snow and Blue Carbon: Ecological Implications and Policy Perspectives

Plastisphere, marine snow, and blue carbon represent integral components of marine ecosystems, each playing a crucial role in shaping environmental dynamics and influencing ecosystem health. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the dynamics, ecological implications, and policy perspectives surrounding these interconnected phenomena. The plastisphere, a microbial community associated with plastic debris, alters microbial community composition and function, influencing nutrient cycling and species interactions. Meanwhile, marine snow facilitates carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling, serving as a conduit for organic carbon transport from surface waters to the deep ocean. Blue carbon habitats, including mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes, sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide and provide essential ecosystem services such as coastal protection and biodiversity conservation. Despite their ecological significance, plastisphere, marine snow, and blue carbon ecosystems face threats from plastic pollution, climate change, and habitat degradation. Plastic pollution disrupts microbial processes, alters carbon dynamics, and compromises ecosystem integrity, highlighting the urgent need for effective mitigation strategies. Policy and management implications for addressing plastic pollution, blue carbon conservation, and marine snow dynamics are discussed. Recommendations include strengthening regulations, promoting circular economy approaches, enhancing monitoring and enforcement, and fostering international cooperation to address these interconnected environmental challenges comprehensively. By integrating these recommendations into policy and management frameworks, governments, stakeholders, and communities can work together to tackle plastic pollution while promoting the conservation of blue carbon and marine snow habitats, safeguarding marine ecosystem health and resilience for generations to come.
