Characterization of Biodegradable Plastic-Producing Bacteria Isolates from Atlantic Ocean

The importance of biodegradable plastic producing bacteria is determined by the properties they conferred on the type of plastic(s) they degrade. Despite the known advantages of biocompatibility, similarity to the petrochemical plastics properties and complete biodegradability that bioplastics possesses, the characteristics of the producers of these bioplastics is of immense importance to bioplastic synthesis. This review explored the different types of bioplastics used in our daily activities, the conditions by which certain bacteria synthesized them and the conditions of their biodegradability. Revelations from this study shows that different bioplastics usefulness is determined by the inherent ability conferred by their producing microbes and in particularly bacteria. It also shows that most of the bioplastic synthesizing bacteria are indigent to the hypersaline environment, even though the possibility of survival for some outside this habitat exists. However, there are mechanisms and conditions of proliferation and synthesizing the bioplastic. It is therefore concluded that for any bacteria to exhibit synthesis of bioplastics, there are conditions for the synthesis and optimal production of same.
