The proliferation and disposal of plastics pose a significant challenge to the planet’s sustainability. Over the recent years, around 70–80% of plastic waste has been deposited in landfills or the environment. This Plastic waste that enters the environment undergoes fragmentation, weathering and other processes, breaking down into microplastics (plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in size). While much research and attention has been given to microplastic pollution in marine/aquatic ecosystems, it is important to also pay attention to the terrestrial ecosystems which are also vulnerable. Microplastics have been found in various terrestrial environments, originating from sources such as the textile industries which produces microfibres, sewage sludge, pharmaceutical industries, plastic mulch and many others. Plastic disrupts environmental balance by acting as physical barriers, degrading soil quality and being ingested by organisms, leading to their demise. Therefore, effective management of plastic pollution is crucial due to its detrimental impact on the environment. This work discusses microplastics in the ecosystems as well as methods of detection and identification such as the use of visual inspections, Fourier transform infrared, SEM-EDS amongst others.
