This chapter presents victims’ perspectives on their interactions with law enforcement during incidents of family violence. It highlights the difficult decisions victims face in these situations and the factors that influence their choice to engage with or avoid state institutions, such as the police. The chapter discusses barriers that impact these interactions, including negative relationships with the Australian Police, community norms, societal stigma, and the availability—or lack—of support systems. The findings indicate that, in many cases, victims do not see involving the police as a viable or desirable option for addressing family violence. This challenges mainstream narratives within the family violence sector, which often assume that seeking help necessarily requires legal intervention through the police.
