This chapter introduces the book by placing the research within the context of African Australians and the legal system while discussing this research's contributions to existing literature. Through qualitative research, the book examines family violence intervention orders within the South Sudanese community, specifically using data gathered from semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 applicants and respondents of family violence intervention orders. The chapter is divided into four parts. First, it briefly introduces the book and identifies the gaps it aims to fill in various sectors in Australia and beyond. Second, it provides background information on the researched area and defines key terms throughout the book, such as family, family violence, intervention orders, decolonisation, and colonialism. Third, the chapter elaborates on the methodology used in this research and discusses the ethical considerations involved. Finally, it concludes by outlining the structure of the subsequent chapters in the book.
