Inflow and Outflow Channel

Most waterwheel systems are run-of-river power plants, which are designed as diversion power plants. The inflow to a waterwheel system consists of the water intake structure, the inflow channel heading towards the wheel, the trash rake, the diversion sluice gate (to be able to drain excess water next to the waterwheel), and the inlet structure to the waterwheel after the rake. The mill channel branches off from a weir built into the natural channel of a river or stream, This artificial channel must be dimensioned in such a way that a sufficient flow, is led to the waterwheel, without having to accept a great loss of head. The rake serves to clean the water of floating debris, which is also associated with hydraulic losses. These losses and the discharge in a channel will be described.
