The first chapter describes different types of waterwheels which are known from historical references. The physical dimensions of the overshot waterwheel are defined and simple design rules are established. The backshot waterwheel is considered because it is very similar to an overshot waterwheel. The backshot wheel is not further considered in the book because of these similarities. Finally, new developments in hydraulic machines in the low head range are considered.
