Dry eye symptoms are quite common after all laser vision correction procedures. Although during the first weeks of the post-op period, some tear hyposecretion occurs due to the loss in corneal nerve fibers and sensory receptors induced by the surgical procedure; the main cause of persistent dry eye symptoms is related to the corneal nerve regeneration process. In fact, the neuropathic component of the ocular surface discomfort experienced by these patients seems to be the main cause of the post-laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) corneal dysesthesia. This syndrome is characterized by a discrepancy between the patient complaints and the relative normal tear parameters, and the poor response to conventional topical lubricants.
