Transient laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK)-induced dry eye is likely the most common complication following LASIK surgery. The neurotrophic component attributable to nerve injury produced by the surgery typically lasts 6–8 months in most patients but symptoms can persist indefinitely, especially in those with inflammatory or evaporative dry eye disease prior to surgery. Careful attention to preoperative and postoperative management of this condition has a major impact on patient satisfaction following LASIK surgery.
