The Northeast region of India has immense tourism potential despite the challenges of underdevelopment, lack of infrastructure and security issues persisting over the years. There has been an alarming boost in reliance on digital platforms, starting from planning, to booking and payment related to travel, which has unveiled a number of issues concerning security, trust and transparency in transactions of online tourism which can likely be solved with the help of Blockchain technology, owing to its unique and dispersed architecture. The present work makes use of the latest method of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) known as the Best Worst Method (BWM) to highlight the critical essence of different aspects or criteria integrating blockchain that are considered by potential tourists to evaluate the official websites operated by Indian state government across North-eastern states, while elucidating their effectiveness on the relevant website traits. Results indicate that Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya occupy a relatively superior position to the other states; but not far behind with existing lacunas when it comes to quantify the inflows through the tourism websites. Tourism stakeholders and website managers often spend significant resources collecting data and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of business websites. Even though the adoption of blockchain-led solutions is deterred by the lack of awareness, acute technical expertise and limited relevant policies, the adoption of the Best–Worst Method (BWM) which is an approach based on criteria, such as the one illustrated in this study may provide fruitful utility. The current work is confined to the official websites owned by the governments only, irrespective of the private-run digital platforms and focuses solely on the perspectives of the tourists rather than the views from industry professionals. Future studies should concentrate on supply chain management, cost–benefit analyses and integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) to supplement blockchain-enabled solutions in digital tourism.
