Tools for Addressing Psycho-Social-Emotional Aspects of Care
摘要
This chapter discusses the importance of addressing the psycho-social-emotional aspects of care for individuals with chronic illnesses. It highlights the increased risk of depression and suicide ideation among those living with chronic illnesses, particularly those with poor mental health, low socioeconomic status, and limited family support. The chapter emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to assess for suicide risk, especially when patients exhibit significant changes in functioning and report disruptions in work, school, or social activities. It provides examples of red flags and direct verbal cues that may indicate suicidal thoughts. The chapter also explores the use of mental health screeners to identify and monitor mental health conditions, such as the Patient Health Questionnaires, Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and PROMIS. By incorporating these tools and seeking interdisciplinary support, healthcare providers can better assess and intervene with patients at risk of suicide.
