Engaging Patients in Research: Incorporating the Patient Perspective
摘要
This chapter discusses the significance of patient participation in rheumatology research, acknowledging that recruiting participants is a challenge. It presents recipes for engagement for rheumatology professionals on how to engage patients in research. The beginning of this chapter raises awareness of the patient experience and offers communication tools and strategies based on foundational skills practiced in the field of social work. Secondly, the chapter discusses strategies for engaging diverse, multicultural populations in research, particularly important given existing health disparities across rheumatic diseases. Note that this chapter is focused on engaging patients in active research studies and does not focus on patient participatory research in which patients are involved in the research development process.
