The Role of Social Media in Promoting or Violating Human Rights
摘要
Social media has gained popularity as one of the principal drivers of the dynamic change in modern societies, presenting opportunities and challenges to human rights. The chapter attempts to scrutinize the nexus between that potential complexity set of roles of social media in the respect of respecting or violating human rights, mainly by the ways it can contribute toward governance, accountability, and social change. Drawing on a qualitative descriptive and analytical review design of literature, through a qualitative research approach, it tries to trace the patterns discernible in the relationship between social media and human rights. The chapter will identify the possibility of human rights promotion through social media, particularly through its function in promoting global awareness and mobilizing social movements. Yet it will also underline various attendant dangers, involving the exacerbation of human rights abuse and propagation of skewed stories. The study concludes by proposing a galley for free expression and the protection of human rights on digital platforms with a call for careful management to ensure positive impacts, and to mitigate the negative consequences of social media on society.
