The rise of online education has highlighted the urgent need for more effective methods to improve student engagement, retention, and learning outcomes. Gamification has emerged as an intriguing strategy for achieving success in this realm. Accordingly, this chapter assesses the influence of gamification on learning outcomes for adult learners, particularly employees and managers participating in MOOCs and CoPs. A quantitative methodology was employed to compare the performance results of two groups: one group engaged with a gamified course, while the other experienced a traditional course format. The study considered various course-related metrics, including participation levels, final assessment scores, self-reported satisfaction, and retention rates as determined by course completion. The findings indicate a significant positive correlation between gamification and both student engagement and retention. The completion rates for courses improved with the implementation of gamification, providing evidence of its effectiveness in online education. Consequently, these results position gamification as a vital initiative for enhancing the experiences associated with digital education, with potential applications in future educational practices and research.

摘要
