Ireland’s regional and local roads require strengthening and renewal to provide an adequate level of service to road users impacting rideability, comfort and accessibility for tourism, goods, and service delivery to local communities. Over the past two years the Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have funded the development of a trial section of Low Energy Bound Material (LEBM) on the R180 to the south of Lough Egish, Monaghan, incorporating a cold-mix, high reclaimed asphalt content LEBM as part of the pavement renewal overlay. By using predominantly Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) material and bound with a bitumen emulsion, a highly sustainable pavement material was produced due to reduced virgin material use and reduced energy consumption. This paper summarises the findings from the development of the trial section and the performance of the renewed pavement structure and LEBM layer after one year of opening to traffic.
