Material Supply of Urban Factories Using Circulation Hubs - An Analytical Comparison of the Logistical Effort

Climate change, the responsible use of natural resources, and continuous urbanization raise the question of how urban factories can be supplied more sustainably. The concept of an Urban Circulation Hub can provide a potential solution. An Urban Circulation Hub can meet the resource needs of urban production systems by specifically collecting suitable waste materials generated in urban areas and making them available as input or secondary raw materials. By establishing such a hub, originally unused waste material flows can be made accessible and usable. This paper focuses on the logistical effort of an Urban Circulation Hub, for which scenarios are compared and evaluated with a simulation in AnyLogic. The simulation is based on a case study of an eyewear factory in Sydney. The result shows that an Urban Circulation Hub can be a sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective alternative for raw material supply. However, this requires sufficiently recycling waste streams generated in the urban area.
