In inviting Einstein to lecture on relativityRelativitytheory of theory in Paris, Langevin challenged the post-war boycott of German science. His visit in April 1922 was a Parisian social event and a political gesture that gained media attention. From a scientific perspective, it was the crowning achievement of Langevin’s long battle for disseminating the theory of relativity in the physics community and for discussing the notion of time with French philosophers. The tense debate with Henri BergsonBergson, Henri at the Societé française de philosophie had a tremendous cultural impact in France. It was the acme of the French tradition of dialogue between scientists and philosophersRelativityand philosophy although it ended in a series of monologues.
