In the long evolution of any kind of technical systems (such as an electric machines), from time to time there take place interesting events—developers manage to modify and improve system characteristics that were initially considered fundamentally unchangeable and impossible to enhance. Often, these changes happen in completely unexpected ways, previously unknown or outright rejected. The idea of such a radical improvement is called an invention. The inventor has to break through real or perceived limitations, psychological inertia, and professional stereotypes. Naturally, not all inventions are of equal complexity and value. In the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ), inventions are categorized into five levels based on complexity. Below are the levels (from highest to lowest) with examples from the field of electrical machines:
