The Women of 1922 revisits women’s literature in 1922, a year that—despite the expansion of modernism studies and the emergence of widely differing conceptions of what modernism is or was—continues to be privileged as a modernist annus mirabilis, but which can also be viewed through many other frameworks. Building on readings of 1922 as synonymous with high modernism, this introduction provides the collection’s rationale for greater inclusion of women in our memory of this year, as developments in the field shift us away from the traditional “when” and “where” of modernism. One upshot of focusing our vision on women’s writing in that single year is that it invites us to extend our memory of the annus mirabilis beyond male-centric accounts of modernism in European and North American spheres, yet in ways that put pressure on efforts at inclusiveness based on the idea of “multiple modernities.” Articulating the collection’s synchronic methodological framework, the introduction lays out how its single-year, global cross-section in women’s writing permits an examination of synchronous phenomena that may or may not otherwise have been understood as central to the modernist project, reorganising the temporal and geographical centres and peripheries of modernism in the process.
