In an increasingly VUCA environment, manufacturing firms face unprecedented challenges that threaten operational continuity and competitiveness. This study conducts a systematic literature review to identify and synthesise the key capabilities that enable manufacturing organisations to build and strengthen resilience against disruptions. Analysing 99 articles, the review uncovers a significant growth in scholarly interest in manufacturing resilience, particularly following global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings reveal that resilience in manufacturing is a multifaceted construct comprising a synergistic combination of attributes, capabilities, and factors. Ten critical capabilities are identified: flexibility and adaptability; agility and rapid responsiveness; digitalisation and technological innovation; collaboration and integration; redundancy and robustness; learning and innovation; proactivity and anticipation; leadership and culture; supply chain visibility and transparency; and sustainability and green manufacturing. These capabilities collectively empower organisations to anticipate, absorb, recover from, and adapt to disruptions. The study concludes that developing resilience is not reliant on a singular capability but requires an integrated approach that combines organisational strategies, technological advancements, and environmental considerations. The insights provide a roadmap for industry leaders and policymakers to develop adaptable and resilient manufacturing systems. Future research opportunities are suggested, including exploring the synergistic development of resilience capabilities in different contexts, examining the role of leadership and organisational culture in fostering resilience, and assessing the impact of emerging technologies on manufacturing resilience. By embracing these capabilities, manufacturing firms can not only withstand disruptions but also leverage them as opportunities for growth and innovation, ensuring sustainability and success in an ever-changing world.
