Use of Digital Solutions in Modern Engineering: A Case Study on Water Flow Through a Turbine Spiral Casing
摘要
Geometric,computer-aided-design (CAD)model of the spiral casingof a Francis turbine is created using the point cloud obtained by its 3D scanningin areal hydropower plant. Proceeding from that CAD model, computational mesh is automatically generated and the flow fieldsare computed for a range of assumed water flow rates using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Pressure is evaluated at the monitoring locations that are adopted in accordance with the Winter-Kennedy method. The mathematical relation betweenthe correspondingflow rates and the spatial pressure differences is established. The procedure presented here can be used to support monitoring and estimation of water flow rates througha hydroturbine using Winter-Kennedy method, depending on pressure values measured in the spiral casing in operating conditions.
