To the best of my recollection, H. Tristram Engelhardt invited me to take over the editorship of the Catholic Studies in Bioethics (CSIB) subseries in 2001 or perhaps early 2002. The first volume under my editorship, Pope John Paul II’s Contribution to Catholic Bioethics (which I edited) appeared in 2004; the last, and final in the series before its ending, was Jason Eberl’s Contemporary Controversies in Catholic Bioethics, in 2017. I’ll return to my stewardship of the series shortly. But first, I’ll discuss the origins of the series and the work of its early editors. Mapping the aspirations of the series founders will make possible an appraisal of continuities and discontinuities between the first ten years of the series’ life and the remaining fifteen and a judgment of whether the series was overall successful by its own lights.
