This chapter investigates the impact of the Mexico Declaration and Plan of Action on Mexico City’s progression towards sanctuary city status. The chapter sets out to explore the role of sanctuary cities in the context of inclusion of a gender perspective in attempts to minimise gender disparities and reach gender equality in the context of Mexico City and the city’s protection of migrant women. We examine in particular the role of Insituto para las Mujeres en la Migración in assisting migrant women in the city and throughout the country. We argue for the need to incorporate a gender perspective into Mexico City’s future sanctuary efforts in migrant protection, acknowledge the intersectional aspects of the experience of migrant women, and emphasise the urgency for the municipality to take a stand against the discriminatory practices performed at the federal level in regard to immigration.

摘要
