This paper introduces a novel approach for achieving unicast-like communication within MQTT multicast groups. The inherent nature of MQTT as a publish-subscribe protocol allows for efficient group communication; however, there can be specific scenarios where direct communication between two clients in a multicast group is required. In a conventional MQTT setup, this direct, unicast-like communication is not supported. Our proposed method creatively adapts MQTT's existing publish-subscribe mechanism to enable this feature, thereby enhancing the protocol’s flexibility and utility. The proposed method involves creating unique sub-topics within the multicast group topic for each pair of clients that need direct communication. A client sends a message to another specific client by publishing it to their corresponding unique sub-topic. The receiving client, having subscribed to this sub-topic, receives the message directly, thus achieving a unicast-like communication. This approach maintains the group’s communication, allows direct exchanges, and ensures privacy and security while reducing network traffic and processing overhead.
